Utopia

People are inherently bad. I know that’s a very polarizing opinion to put on the internet, but I truly believe it. People’s instinct is to parade through life with selfish motivations, disregarding everyone around them. Obviously, through some mix of nurture, real-life experience, and the pain of hurting those close to them, people usually find some kind of moral code to obey for the rest of their lives. However, the difficulty of choosing the path less traveled often times overtakes the urge to side with morality.

Although it is physically impossible to remove all human error from the world, there are a few (fairly unethical) laws the government could make in an attempt to eliminate evil from the world.

To begin, the government could outlaw any sort of weapon owned by its citizens. This way, it would be challenging to harm other citizens or rebel against law enforcement in any way. The people would be more or less helpless to any other orders made by the government.

After taking away their power to revolt, the government has the potential to subject the people to whatever deemed necessary. I think that the next best step of action is establishing a communist government in order to prevent greed. If every common citizen has the same opportunities and same economic status, then stealing should no longer be an issue.

Following the complete change to communism, I think the government should make every unjustifiable crime punishable by death. The line between justifiable and not may become easily blurred, but it is similar to getting a self defense charge versus a murder charge. If the person did not commit the crime out of self-preservation, then he or she will be sentenced to death. This way, people are unwilling to risk their lives for trivial disputes.

Last but not least, the government positions should be changing constantly in order to prevent corruption. Though experience is required for some of the more coveted roles, most of the jobs within the federal government should be given to people of all backgrounds. Then, the people feel represented in their own helplessness.

(I don’t believe any of these laws would go over well in any modern nation, but if one was looking to truly eliminate evil through government policy, this legislation would be worth a shot.)

I liked how you made specific laws or guidelines that would decrease probelems caused by people but then explained how these laws are unethical. It provides a good glimpse into how governments can limit human behavior, but it isn’t necessarily a good idea to. Good job!

Your descriptions sound more dystopian than utopia as a government would take total control, however, I am intrigued about how you are pushing back on a utopia at all. Should we just give up if humans are inherently bad?

George Carlin certainly thought so, but I think incrementally striving for change is the happy medium between doing nothing and striving for a complete overhaul.

I love how you decomposed modern day issues and notions which became prominent in the 20th century into a cohesive description of a utopia. Mrs. Ely noted the irony of how utopia sounds more like dystopia, which I think is an indicator of where society risks ending up, should it radically pursue utopia.
