This week, I debated whether or not I should write my own advice (risking the possibility of annoying all of the audience) or if I should go to someone else seeking advice. I finally decided to completely separate myself from the concept of advice and go to my mom. Rather than asking her for advice on a certain subject, I decided to ask her about all of the advice she’s ever received. Here’s the finished product:

“What’s the worst advice you’ve ever received?”

“Probably the worst advice I’ve ever gotten is to live for myself and not worry about how what I do affects others.”

“What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?”

“I think my best advice has been ‘do things with moderation.’ It’s not that you can’t ever have a drink, splurge, or stay awake past your bedtime, but you can’t always do all of those things all of the time.”

“What’s your advice for seniors like me trying to figure out their futures?”

“My advice for seniors trying to figure out their futures? I have to write this down…”
(she proceeded to type out the following:)

“Take your time when making decisions.  It’s better to thinking through things versus being impulsive.

Ask as many questions as you can to your community and your potential landing places.  The more you ask, the more you’ll know.

People will ask you life questions non stop.  You don’t have to have all the answers and it’s really okay to admit that you don’t have everything completely figured out yet.

Surround yourself with a stable and supportive community.  Look around at the people who support you the biggest, and pour into those spaces the most.  Chances are if people aren’t super supportive during your senior year, they won’t be the people that you stay in touch with.”

She said she could write a book about the last question, but I decided not to take any more of her time.

While this week’s blog may be a little short, I think that her words are concise and applicable to every single person trying to make an important decision. Her advice is something I will cherish forever.

Wow. That was really great advice! The whole “do things in moderation” and the part about supportive people really hit home for me. Sounds like a great mini-interview!

Ok. Your mom’s sage responses are truly #momgoals. Great questions by the way. I love the “what is the worst advice you’ve ever received?”.

I came to your blog this week because I knew whatever advice you decided to share would be wise and I was correct. Your mom is the best and if she ever decides to write a book, I would for sure read it!
